“IGNOMINIOUS SURRENDER.”
BRITAINS POLICY IN EGYPT
LONDON, February 11
The Daily Alail draws attention to Air. Murray Harris’ book," “Egypt, Under- the Egyptians,” which it says “impresses the reader like an extract from Gibbon’s ‘Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.’ ” Mr. Harris declares that Britain’s position has been undermined since the war by pitiable hesitancy, conflicting counsels, and ignominious surrenders to the presistent clamour of the Egyptians, who, like all Orientals, regarded every concession ns a further symptom of weakness. Consequently, he says, Britain’s vacillations were merely incitement to revolt.
Mr. Harris adds that Britain ought to have annexed Egypt during the war. instead of proclaiming ai protectorate, which resulted in the sacrifice of the Empire’s vital interests to a. passing phase and tire theory of self-determina-tion. This mistake should not be repeated in the Sudan, which it would he a folly to surrender to Egypt.
