ATHLETIC CARNIVAL.
APPEARANCE OF AUSTRALIANS. Brilliant nominations have been received for the athletic carnival to be held, in Hawera on Wednesday night next, and the best programme yet shown in Hawera is assured. The local club is to be favoured with a visit from the Australian athletic champions, six in number. . Some of their most notable performances are : Norman Grehan (Queensland), holder of the Australasian record for the 220 yards, and present Australasian champion. From the scratch mark he lyon the 220 yards at Masterton on the 17th in 22 2-ssee. Parker (Queensland), present 100 yards Australasian champion, who has frequently run the 100 yards in under lOeec. He has already won several races since his arrival in New Zealand, equalling the New Zealand record for the 120 yards. He won the 100 yards at Masterton recently in lOsee. W. M. Whyte (Victoria) is a stylish middle distance runner, and is the present Australasian champion over the 880 yards. Competing at Wellington recently, he ran the 1000 yards in the exceptional time of 2.18 4-5, which is a record of 3sec better than ever established in New Zealand. At Pahiatua recently he won the 880 yards in the good time of 2.2 4-5. Burness (N.S.W.), crack cyclist, probably better than any amateur rider in New Zealand, is a powerful rider and holder of many championships in Australia.
Borlase (Victoria) is a fine distance runner, with a notable record, and ran a very good race at Masterton on 17th inst.
Hyde (Victoria) is another tip-top distance runner, and ran second to the New Zealand champion (Rose) in the one and three-mile Australasian championships last year. The other visiting athletes include a team of eight from Patea, five from New Plymouth, five from Wanganui, and two from Stratford. Edide Scott, who will compete at the New Zealand ehampionshins next week, will he seen “full out” in the 440 yards. George Franks will be down from Tahora for the high jump. He is also for the New Zealand championships. Harry Kerr. ex-Australasian champion walker, will compete in the one mile walk, and Salisbury and Hunt will try conclusions in the shot putting. A splendid programme of music is to be played bv the Hawera Municipal Band under the eouductorship of Lieut. Fox. which will make the carnival programme enjoyable throughout.

Particulars of train- arrangements and of issue- of holiday excursion ti<d.-°ts: in- connection with New Zealand amateur 'athletic championships at Wanganui on 27th. and 28t-h, February are- advertised in this issue. Miss M. A. Bates, teacher of painting, will resume tuition on Wednesday, February 25, and has vacancies for a few more pupils.
