DANGEROUS RIDING.
TN RACE TRAFFIC. SPEED OF 50 MILES PER. HOUR.. A case under the new Motor Vehicles Act. 1924, came before the Hnwera Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Arnold Watson was charged with riding a motor-cvcle in a manner dangerous to the public. Mr Houston, instructed by the Hawera Borough Council, said that the offence had been committed on *the Glover Road When there was a good deal of race traffic about. Two of the race traffic inspectors, Messrs Fraser and McKenzie, saw defendant proceeding along the road, and estimated his speed at 50 miles per hour. Later defendant had seen Inspector Hunt, and to him he had admitted that he had been travelling fast, but not at 50 miles ner hour. Mr Houston said that both of the inspectors who had witnessed tlie occurrence were men of experience with motor-cars. Defendant, questioned by the Magistrate (Mr J. S. Barton), said that the throttle of his motor-cycle came open and jammed, and lie could not shut the benzin-v off for a. while. N Mr Houston, however, pointed out that when Watson was spoken to by the inspectors he immediately, moderated his speed. “I 'am not prepared to accept- your exnln.nnti'ui ” said his Worship, in addre'ssir'- defendant, “and von will be fln' > d V Rts and 7s court- costs, with soßcfror’s fee a sruiuen and witnesses’, expenses amounting to Bs.'’
