BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Feb. 16.
The Irish Free State Treason Bill represents the final effort to come to grips with the De Valera Party. The Republicans are already angrily discussing the proposals. Madame Markievicz says: “Hitherto I have called Mr De Valera ‘Dev.’ I shall now call him president.” The Bill ordains the death penalty for the following acts: Levying war against the Free State Government; assisting or harbouring anyone so engaged ; conspiring to levy war; assisting, encouraging or harbouring anyone conspiring. Anyone who attempts to overawe a member of the executive council by force or arms or incites the police or army to refuse duty is liable to penal servitude for 20 years.
