CROQUET.
TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tn the presence of a number of spectators the croquet championships were continued at the Hawera green yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Cook (New Plymouth) won the final of the championship doubles, defeating Mr. Clague and Mrs. McKay (Manaia) in two straight-out; games. The score in the first game, was 26 —23, and in the second 26 —18. At the; commencement of the first game Manaia got in a big lead, but Mrs Morris got in a long shot at a very critical .time, and thereby gained the advantage for lier side. Once in the lead. New Plymouth went on to win in a' brilliant finish. In the second game give and take play was indulged in until near the end, when the New Plymouth players got together and never gave their opponents another chance. ... The final of the champion singles will be played on the Hawera green at 10 o’clock on Wednesday, when All. Clague, of Manaia, will meet the Rev. Mr. Meredith, of Wanganui. Naturally, a great contest is expected.
TEAMS MATCHES
EOT? DR. HOME ROSE BOWL.
Play was continued yesterday afternoon in the teams matches for possession of the coveted trophy, the Dr. Home Rose Bowl. To-day the winners of last year, Hawera, were beaten this morning by Manaia, the latter allowing a fair margin of superiority in each doubles match. Play is being continued in the tournament. TO-MORROW—WEDNESDAY. The champion singles final between Meredith and Clague will be commenced to-morrow morning, and during the dav other finals will be concluded.
