CROQUET TOURNAMENT.
SATURDAY'S PLAY. SEMI-FINALS. SOME CLOSE CONTESTS. The extremely hot weather that ’prevailed on Saturday seemed to anect many of the players, for aithougn die linisnes in the semi-finals were mostly close, the play was not generally brilliant. The closeness of the results, however, kept the. spectators on tlie tiptoe of excitement as the games progressed. It was found impossible, owing to one competitor being in two semi-finals, to play the championship singles today. This has therefore been postponed until Wednesday, usd further notice, will be given. fn the champion singles Mrs. N. Johnson and Mrs. Dowling had a right royal contest for the honour of getting into the semi-finals, and only at the last hoop was it decided is favour of the former by two points. Both played very well. Mrs. Johnson gave Mr. Clague good game in the semi-finals. Towards the close the latter was a long way ahead and pegged one ball. his opponent, however, with a full long shot secured the other, and took it with her to make several more hoops. iVlr. Clague had . several long shots at the peg, but, missing, lay up close for his next and went out easily. Mrs. Johnson had made a fise fighting finale. Both were heartily applauded. Mr. Clague now meets Mr. Meredith in the final, to be played on Wednesday at 10 a.in. Mesdames Suisted and Glasson playeded for the semi-finals with Mesdames Dowling and J. E. Campbell in the handicap doubles, and worning well together and with great confidence ran out easy winners by a margin of seventeen points. Two more fine struggles were seen in the semi-finals for the championship doubles, both finishing practically the same. Mesdames Morris and Cook beat Mesdames Suisted and Glasson, and McGlague and Mrs. McKay were too good for Airs. Alorrison and Aliss Norman. The two former will fight out the finals.
Arrangements were again excellent]}’ conducted, and no time was lost in any respect. This has been a marked feature of the whole tournament. The committee wish to acknowledge receipt of a donation from Mrs. Scaulan, New Plymouth. Results were as follow : Champion Singles. Third ltound.—Mrs. N Johnson beat Mrs. Dowling 26—24. Semi-final. —Mr. Clague beat Mrs. Johnson 26—18. Champion Doubles. Semi-final. —Clague and Mrs. McKay l,eat Mrs. Morrison nsd Miss Norman 2& —17; Mesdames Morris and Cook beat Mesdames Suisted and Glasson 26—18. Handicap Doubles. Semi-final. —Mesdames Suisted and Glasson beat Mesdames Dowling and J. E. Campbell 26 —9. TO-DAY’S PLAY". The other semi-final of the handicap doubles is being played, and then there will be the finals and the teams match still to go. TEAMS MATCH. The teams are each six strong, and there are five entered. They play, in three doubles, and the final will be the best of three matches. Hawera and New Plymouth Park (Pukekura) are the first draw and are playing to-day. The result of the teams match will decide the possession of the Dr. Home rose-bowl. The very keenest interest is being taken in the event.
