Constable J. Scannell, of Manaia, has returned from his annual leave of absence and resumed duty on Tuesday. During Constable Scannell’s absence his duties at Manaia have been attended to by Constable J. O’Donoghue, of Ivaponga.
On the advice of the Ministers and health authorities the Governor-General has decided to abandon his official visit to Christchurch, Dunedin, linvereargill and Tim'aru during the next three* weeks. The decision was made in order to avoid the risk to children entailed by large public gatherings during the prevalence of infantile paralysis. For tJi© same reason their Excellencies have postponed similar visits to Wanganui Mew Plymouth, Palmerston North, Napier and Hastings, and for the present will remain in residency at Wellington. ‘
The following resolution was passed at a meeting of the council of the Wellington District Law Society: “The council of the Wellington District Law Society sincerely deplores the death of the late Hon. Oliver Samuel, K. 0., M.L.C., who, though he had long since retired from active practice, maintained a close touch with the profession, and was ever ready to consider sympathetically representations made to him by the Law Society, whether on behalf of the profession or of the public generally, and whose great ability, application, knowledge of legal principles and experience of affairs enabled him to rank as one of the most useful of our legislators. The council, directs that a copy of this resolution be sent to Mrs. Samuel, to whom the council desires to express the sincere and respectful sympathy'of the members of the society in her great losst**
