THE EGMONT MEETING. HORSES ARRIVING. Trainer Lloyd arrived by train yesterday, bringing Sunnrt and Clandhu to fulfil engagements at the Egmont meeting. Merit and Anthem arrived by the mail train last evening, in charge of Bid Reid. The Tank, in charge of J. P. McLaughlin, arrived last evening to take liis place in the Nolan Cup run to-mor-row. Trainer Olsen brought Bezan through by train last ngiht. Landslide is expected from Auckland, but will not arrive till to-morrow tnornill S'RAWER A TRACK NOTES. Work on the ITnwera tracks was hampered this morning by a thick mist, which-quite obscured the horses as they came round the hack of the course. The course proper was open for fast work.i
Lady Bentinck ran four furlongs ves t erda.v in bOscc.
Avo I a and Bright Day yesterday ■were associated in a mile and a quarter ran in 2.13. This morning the former by herself went over the same distance on the course proper. Stilishot and Eerie went over a mile on the plough, run in I.4th The former went very well and held a good advantage at the finish. Runny Vale and Blue Peter galloped live furlongs in 1.3. The former slightly left his companion. Mu ran hi and Euchre went off together for a mile on the outside of the course jumper and picked up The Tank at the six furlong peg. The last, named was a good length to the good from Murnahi at the finish. Euchre was well back. The time for the mile was 1.40. Mamin and Carnbee did half a mile on the plough in -'2see. The Banker, Lady Cavendish and • olferange all did steady pace work on the plough. Sunnrt and Clandhu also were out doing paee work. Merit cantered round the plough on her own. NOTES AND COMMENTS’. (By Maecenas.) The Maiden Scurry at Egmont is composed mostly of unknown quantities hut Vaward showed pace at Matton,’ and Oration went fast enough at Ellerslie to win most scurries. IS followers of the successful Jamieson stable had good wins- over the successes or Spoony, Gold - 3 - Steel Bar at the Takapuna- meeting, but a good parcel went astray when Spoonv got beaten on Saturday. As it fair amount of rain has fallen of late the race tracks in Taranaki should be in good racing order. Anthem wno figures in the Maiden Scurries at the Taranaki meetings, is an imported lilly, trained by Sul Retd. As she is well seasoned Anthem may do well on the trip. The Egmont Racing Club s acceptances are really good, and the club should have an enjoyable as well as a nnaneiallv good gathering. Patrons at the Egmont meeting tomorrow and Thursday will notice a •great improvement in the lawns, flower plots, etc. This is due to gardener Stevenson, whose work will m timechange the Egmont Racing Club’s grounds into a beauty spot. Outside of the Taranaki province a lot of interest is centred in the Egmont meeting. This is not to be wondered at, as the officers of the club, by their attention and jcoiu-Jtesyi to visiting sportsmen, have earned a fine reputation. In the past sporting writers from outside our province have not attended Taranaki meetings to ony extent, but this year will find the sporting press well represented. Imperial Spark went a good race on the last .day at Trentham, and on the smaller Egmont course should be capable of running a good 8i furlongs in the Whareroa Welter. A good sized field is certain to start for the Waipapa Hack Handicap, and of these several will command respect. Starshell put up such good races at the recent Wellington meeting that it is difficult to go past him. Prior to racing on the West Coast of the South Island, where she won four races, Wench could have been bought for £2OO, at which figure the daughter of Spalpeen could be termed a bargain. The Ohawe Hurdles at Egmont contain some useful jumpers Possibly Eerie may want a race, hilt Pmvhero, Boniiv Rill, and Wench each showed excellent form during the holiday season. Wench again ran consistently at Trentham, and should not lack support. At the recent Auckland and Wellington meetings Flipo has shown bis best form by carrying substantial weights and winning in good company He is assured of strong support at Egmont. but at the weights quick beginners like Orchid and The Lamb are certain to make him do bis best. The acceptance of ten for the Egmont Cun is most satisfactory, and what the race lacks in numbers is compensated for by quality. This event bears nn open appearance, but should Sunart secure a better run than came his wav each day be raced at Trentham he should give an excellent account of himself.
Those who profess to know say that Gold Acre is particularly good, and he certainly gave that impression when winning at Trent hani. The presence of Hold Acre in the Taranaki Stakes will lend additional interest in that event. A number of useful “hacks” are engaged in the Xolan Chip, and the event should he interesting. Brigadier Bill is fancied by his connections, while f2l.cn gariff at times has shown form which would suggest a win in a. race of this kind. Filiette lias raced wonder folly well of late, and if freshened up since Wellington The Tank should go well. __A hig field null start for the juvenile Handicap.at F’smont and several of the runners will come in for strong gup-
port. Lady Bentinsk has failed to register a win so far this season, but she lists performed most consistently, and, if. the elect of Cox’s stable, will possibly start favourite. Shut Eye has pace, and as fie is well he is certain r.o run prominently. Of the lightweights Merle has the best credentials and is fast.
In a race run as the last Wellington Cup was there is always a certain amount of “crowding,” hence any rider is liable to land his mount into trouble, line horse which suffered as much as any in the Wellington Cup was Musketoon, hut when too late he was finishing on at a great rate. After another failure in the Takapuna Cup, Musketoon made amends by capturing ihe chief event on Saturday, and as lie paid a good dividend his connections would, no doubt, fall into a good win.
