WOMAN’S VIEWS OF LORDS.
“TOO FOND OF DRESSING UP.’
/Miss Ellen Wilkinson, Labour’s sole woman member of the House ol Commons, gave her impression pf Parliament at a. meeting of the Women’s international League. She said the House of Lords was unreal and rather too- fond of dressing up. The election of the speaker in the House of Commons wars a simple dignified ceremony, but as soon as a Lord tame into contact with a ceremony it degenerated into amateur theatricals. The opening of Parliament was pervaded with the same unreality. There were the Peers’ fantastically dressed ladies in low evening gowns at high noon. There was a nice King lookig absurdly modern, with his crown tilted over his nose, and the Prince of Wales obviously bored to tears. Mi ss Wilkinson was surprised to find that the House of Commons, which was such a. comfortable and exclusive club, did not pay waiters during the long recesses.
