EMPIRE PREFERENCE.
NO MONOPOLY PROPOSED
FOSTERING MUTUAL TRADE
ay CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Jan. 23, 1 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 22.
The Rt. Hon. L. S. Amery, speaking at the Constitutional Club, declared that the policy of Imperial preference was not that of a monopoly. A large measure of preference already existed throughout the Empire, but no tariff acted as a wall. Figures proved the unreality of the talk of British trad© being excluded bv the Dominions. It would he a disaster to Britain if Canada became free trade. The Dominions gave Britain preference, therefore if was a clear case for Britain doing something in return. The Government came into power prepared, within certain limits, to fully carry 1 out in ©very direction a policy of fostering, mutual trade in the Empire, and building up its* strength.
