Dr. Karl Hauck, the author of the History of Civilisation iri the German Empire, a work in 50 volumes, has been arrested on.a charge of stealing thousands of documents and prints out of the Prussian archives between the years 1918 and 1922. When Dr. Hawk’s flat was searched it was found to be filled with the proceeds of similar thefts from the principal libraries of Europe. The depredations have been going on for 30 years. For many years Dr. Hauck has l>een living with a young Austrian, Karl von Hohenlohe, who claimed to have been an Austrian aristocrat, but was really a tailor’s cutter. Hohenlohe assisted Dr. Hauck to sell his manuscripts. Hohenlohe was made a prisoner early in the war. but Dr. Hauck’s influence at the Vatican was so great that he was able to secure Hohenlobe’s release.—Aus. and N.Z. Assn.
