THRILLING RESCUE.
FROM DISTRESSED LAUNCH
Under adverse weather conditions a thrilling rescue of two men from a distressed motor launch at New Plymouth took place on Saturday night. Three men—Messrs A. D. Wylie, of Stratford (owner), D. McKenzie and T. Taylor, of New Plymouth—left on Saturday ’with the White Wings, intending to fish at White Cliffs. W bile travelling along > £he coast the engine broke down. The launch was anchored in about 60 fathoms of water and repairs attempted, which proved unsuccessful,* and as the wind was increasing, sail was hoisted. The wind continued to increase, and the plight of the launch and its occupants was critical.
Distress signals were raised and were observed at the pilot station at New Plymouth, Captain Waller sending out assistance. It was a risky job approaching the launch, but Taylor was taken aboard The other tvvo men decided 'to stay- aboard until further assistance was sent.
Weather conditions became worse, and towards evening distress signals were again observed.' Messrs Smith, of the pilot station staff, and R. Simpson 'gallantly volunteered to go to their assistance, and set out in the launch Sea Wolf. The night was dark and there was nothing to indicate the distressed launch’s position. After a strenuous fight flares made hv Wyle were observed and a line made fast to the launch. The only way a transfer could be effected was by means of this line, and this hazardous undertaking was accomplished after several narrow escapes, and the rescued men were finally brought safely to shore. The White Wings was towed into port the next day.
