PARKIN’S CRITICISM. PRESENTED AT HOME. Hi CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Jan. 15, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 14. Speaking at the Hampstead Club dinner, H. D. G. Leveson-Gow’er, strongly deprecated Parkin’s remarks regarding Gilligan and the Adelaide test match. He said he regretted that a player, who had w T orn the English Cap, should, at a distance of many thousands of miles, have indulged in such unfair criticism. Later. H. D l . Swan, who was in Australia and New Zealand two years ago with the Marylebone team, endorsed all that Mr. Leveson-Goaver had said. A congratulatory telegram on its big efforts in the two test matches, and good wishes for tho rubber, is being sent to Gilligan.

SUCCESS REMOTE. ENGLISHMEN’S BIG TASK. LONDON, Jan. 13. Wilson, in the Daily Express, states: “We must admit that the probability of winning the three remaining tests on foreign soil after 10 successive defeats is very remote. Beyond Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Tate, Woolley and Hendren the side has not shown test form. It has been beaten by ' less brilliant men individually but solider. ■ “Our bowlers have not yet managed to dismiss the Australians twice for less than 850, which is too heavy a task against clever Mailey and Gregory’s speed bursts, backed up by a steady change of bowlers. I hope a chance will be given / to that all-rounder Kilner, who is almost sure to do something. The omission of Fender from the team was a -sad mistake. He has always made the hall turn on the Australian wickets, and might have proved the English Mailey.”

SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH

WON BY SOUTH AUSTRALIA

ADELAIDE, Jan. 14. South Australia beat New South Wales by 161 runs in the Sheffield Shield match. The match was concluded to-day in fine weather and on a good wicket. New South Wales in their second innings made 226 (Punch 32, Nothling 25, Mayes 29 not out). Grimmett took six wickets for 103.

New South Wales’ effort was hopeless at the outset, and when Grimmett struck the form he did, the result was placed beyond doubt.

NOMADS PLAY SOUTHLAND. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 14. The North Island Nomads commenced a match against Southland today in beautiful weather and on an excellent wicket. The visitors in the first innings made 280, when stumps were drawn.
