SCOUTS HALL

CONTRACT LET. OFFER TO PLUNKET SOCIETY. ACCEPTANCE CONFIRMED. Some time about the middle of this month work will be commenced on the erection of a scouts’ hall for the Hawera Scouts. This . important step marks a new epoch in the history of the Scout movement in the district, and its culmination reflects the greatest credit on the committee and the ladies who for some considerable time past have worked most assiduously in order to secure the necessary funds. Not only does the erection of the building mean that for the first time the Scouts will have a building of their own, but the Plunket Society will be in the satisfactory position of also being housed in its own quarters. , Tentative arrangements were made some time ago between the Scout Committee and the Plunket Society Whereby the latter were to occupy a portion of the building and pay the pro rata cost of the erection. Finality was reached last evening when the Plunket Society accepted the Scouts Committee ’s proposal to contribute £l9O as its share of the cost of the building, and for the society to pay the cost of the interior work required for the tivo rooms it will occupy. It was originally intended to erect the hall at the rear of the Technical School, but following representations by a number of residents, this site was abandoned and an understanding arrived at between the Borough Council and the Scout Committee. The new building will be erected in Albion. Street near the premises of the Loan and Mercantile, and it is generally conceded that the site now decided upon is infinitely better for the purpose than that originally proposed. The Scouts will have a spacious hall and two rooms at the rear of the buildings, while the Plunket Society will have two rooms iii front. A Hawera Star reporter to-day. ascertained that a contract has been let to Mr. Burrell for the supply of labour for the erection of the building, the materials for which will be on the ground in a few days’ time.
