BLOCK off SHOPS DESTROYED

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WHAKATANE, Jan. 14. A fire early this morning destroyed a corner block, comprising Anderson’s restaurant, Phillips’ billiajd room and Bracken’s hairdresser’s establishment. The first started in the kitchen of Anderson’s place, and soon had a good hold, but the fire brigade and helpers managed to save the adjoining properties. The buildings were owned by G. S. Whiteside. The occupants had various insurances, hut are said to be heavy losers. OUTBREAKS ELSEWHERE. NELSON, Jan. 14. Trask's butchery establishment was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The insurances arc not available. OTAKI, Jan. 14. Charles Cottles’ six-roomed residence at Manakau this morning was destroyed by fire. The origin is a mystery.
