LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The new shell-rock road at Moeroa, behind Eltham, is settling remarkably well and is a tribute to the work of the Eltham County Council. As in Hawera, the Stratford Oaths are proving more popular than ever this year. There have been many good improvements effected, and more seating accommodation is to be provided.
A hotelkeeper on the Main Trunk line is evidently a humourist, for he has printed in big liters on the side of his hotel, “All Drinks Free,” and in very small letters underneath, “from adulteration.” The revenue of the New Zealand railways for a period of slightly more than eight mouths of the current financial year was . £IOO,OOO more than for the corresponding period of the previous year.; the expenditure increased by £BO,OOO. The relation between the expenditure and revenue underwent no change. Although motor owners are inquiring daily at the Hawera Tost Office relative to the registration of their vehicles under the new Act, the officials are unable to do anything pending the arrival from Wellington of the necessary registration cards. In the list of New Zealand Cress holders published in Thursday’s Star, the name of J. M. Mackintosh appealed instead of J. Mackintosh Roberts. It might be mentioned that it is held by some that at least 20 Crosses were awarded; but the names published were taken from the New Zealand Official Year Book of 1915, which contains the holders of all honours held in the Dominion up to that time. Fishing at the mouth of the Patea river recently a local angler caught a shark nine feet long. The finding of two sheep’s trotters in the stomach seems to prove that the monster must have swum up river to the viaduct, and he urges bathers to exercise caution. . , . At the meeting yesterday of the Taranaki County Council, attention was drawn to the increasing growth of noxious weeds in the Fgmont National Park at the foot of the Kaitake Ranges. It was decided to draw the attention of the inspector to the matter. Mushrooms have made their appearance in South Canterbury unusually early this year, owing probably to the copious rains. In various parts of the district they are now being gathered, and they are much better grown than usual this year. Mr Dick Kirkwood, a cinema actor, was killed while carrying out a thrilling “stunt” for the pictures. He was clinging to a ladder dangling from an aeroplane flying over the mountains near Los Angeles, when he slipped and crashed to the ground.
