CAN THEY WIN?
THE SECOND TEST. ' ENGLAND’S PROSPECTS. TEAM WITHOUT A “TAIL.” BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. Received Jan. 7, 11.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 7.
The Herald, commenting on the test crick'et, says: “Hearne bowled ..almost throughout the innings. He is a very deceptive bowler, and there is much more guile in his amiable looking slows than is apparent from a distance. He keeps a good length all the time, and bowls with _a: batsman’s knowledge of things. His bowling yesterday was certainly very good, but not good enough, one thinks, to warrant the total exclusion of Tyldesley from the bowling crease. It was an overnight Australian expectation that Tyldesley would be the chief problem for batsmen, so that remarkable perseverance with Hearhe was as _ welcome a manoeuvre as it was surprising. Taylor’s innings was superb in every respect. He showed "wonderful restraint throughout, and his defence .appeared much more solid and effective than usual, while his stroke play was charming in its grace of movement, ease in execution, and the surprising pace imparted to the ball. It was a first-class innings, which greatly promoted Taylor’s international reputation. It 'also had the supreme value of being played when it was sorely needed. He assuredly deserved a century distinction. For England to get the 372 required to win on the present wicket is a most formidable task to accomplish. It is an expectation not warranted by the uneven nature of the English batting to date. It will need to be a wonderful performance for England to succeed.”
