PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr E. Atkin, for the past seven years editor of the Hawera Stax-, who has been appointed sub-editor of the Wanganui Herald, was met last evening by members,.of the staff of the Star at a farewell gathering. An enjoyable time was spent with music' and songs, and his colleagues presented Mr Atkin with a gold-mounted fountain pen, suitably inscribed. Best wishes for the future were extended to Mr and Mrs Atkin befoi-e good-byes were said.
The Rev. .R. E. and Mrs Evans, of the Hawera Presbyterian Church, will leave to-morrow morning on a motor tour to Auckland. They will be away for two weeks. Mr and Mi's Evans returned at the beginning of the week from the Dannevirke Bible Class Con-fei-ence.
Musical people of Hawera and district will be interested to learn that Mr Clement Howe, who was recently appointed organiser and choirmaster a£ St." John’s Presbyterian Church, has arrived in Hawera and has taken charge of the musical direction at the church. Mr Howe is very well known in Wellington as a capable organist, and has also had considerable experience in choral work. He has taken up the practice of his profession as teacher of'organ, piano and theory, and his rooms are at the Presbyterian Schoolroom. .
Bandsman and Mrs. Middleton, of the Eltham Salvation Army Corps, are leaving to-day for Wellington, where they enter a course of training for officership in the Salvation Army. They were given a send-off social last evening, when representatives of the local corps spoke appreciative words indicating the high esteem in which they are held by tlieir fellow-workers. Mr, E. Askew, from Awatuna, is also leaving for the same purpose.
