The Herald, commenting on the cricket, says: “Anticipations were entirely exceeded and not a little confused by the results of the day’s play. It was a magnificant triumph for England cricket, not only resuscitating its prestige, but also in giving it a chance of success in this match where previously none seemed to exist. For two batsmen to defy the bowling and stay in all day is a new record gained by Hobbs and Sutcliffe, as it is also a record to make three opening partnerships running into three figures in test cricket in succession. Hobbs has now almost completed his century of three figure partnerships for the first wicket in big cricket.

PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 5. Requiring 224 runs and with five wickets in hand, Wellington this morning resumed their second innings in the Plunket Shield match against Canterbury. Badcock and Banks, the not out men, scored steadily, both batting conSdentlv. At noon Wellington had made 19-1 for five wickets (Banks not out 33, Badcock not out 48. extras 13.) Badcock appeared to be well set for a century when Sandman got him l.b.w. Dempster, followed, lnit lost. Grant followed, but shared Banks’ fate before opening his account, and Wellington had lost eight, wickets for 224. At 1 p.m. the score was 267 for eight wickets—Banks 45. Badcock 65. Grant 0, Dempster (not out) 31, James (not out) S. extras 18.'
