BOWLING.
THE SYME SHIELD. PLAY-OFF TO-DAY. * \ Play in the competition was continued yesterday afternoon, and there was a "lot of good and interesting form shown by all teams. One particularly close contest was that between ‘Patea and Manaia, in which Patea scored a narrow win by one point. On the total, of the first three rinks Manaia had a lead of nine but Williams’ rink came to light and beat A. H. Christie by 10 points. This result left Hawera and Manaia level, two wins all, and made it necessary to play-off. This was arranged to take place to-day (Saturday) at 2 p.m. The result added a lot of interest to the competition. . In the course of his remarks before the tournament Mr Svme said that his original intention had been to limit competition to the four district clubs —• Hawera, Park, Manaia and Patea—but in view of the development in bowling and the possibility of a South Taranaki tournament on lines similar to other provinces, he suggested throwing it open to South Taranaki, and left the matter for future decision. In the event of such a tournament the shield competition could be run in conjunction. Results of yesterday’s play were as follow:
