LINER ABANDONED.
EXPLOSION FOLLOWS FIRE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. NEW YORK, Dec. 30. Thrilling details are coming to hand of the fire in the Japanese passenger steamer Ginyo Maru, which met disaster north-west of Acapulco ('Mexico) when en route from \ al* paraiso (Chile) to Japan. The steamer carried eighty saloon passengers and a crew of one hundred. Within a few minutes all Pacino radios had been silenced to give full opportunity for the rescuers ascertaining direction while the steamer Julia Luckenbaek speeded to the scene. She arrived at three o’clock in the morning, finding a calm sea dotted with lifeboats surrounding the blazing ship. The captain and thirty of the crew stayed on hoard in a forlorn hope to fight the fire, which had entered number four hold, where nitrates momentarily were expected to explode. The Julia Luckenbach stood by after rescuing the lifeboats and at five o’clock a, terrific explosion occurred. The radio failed with daylight, leaving the fate of those on board somewhat doubtful. VANCOUVER, Dec. 30. A Los Angeles radio message says the Ginyo Maru fire is under control and is almost extinguished. The passengers and crew took to the lifeboats and were rescued. Two children iwere burned to death and two other persons seriously injured. NEW YORK, Dec. 31. The Ginyo Maru has been abandoned. Captain Yamata was the last over the side. The ship was exploding and sinking when the Julia left.
