THE BANK CASE.
. HOBBS REFUSED BAIL. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Dec. 31. Application for bail on behalf of Hobbs, who was arrested following the hearing of evidence in the Midland Bank case, was refused'when the case was resumed at Bow*Street. Air Baldry, head of the legal department of the bank, gave evidence. Owing to the action of C. E. Robinson against the bank in December, 1923, claiming the return of £125,(>00, he communicated with Hobbs, who said that all the work he did in connection with the cheque for £125,000 was at the request of Newton, whom Hobbs knew as Robinson, because Captain Arthur (the arrested aide-de-camp) introduced Newton to. Hobbs as Charles Robinson. Therefore the cheque for £150,000 was intended for Newton, who gave Hobbs the cheque with instructions to collect it, and signed all cheques withdrawing money from the bank.
Newton gave evidence that he first met Hobbs twenty years ago. Hobbs knew his name pretty well. The question of getting money from Sir Hari Singh was first broached to him in November, 1919, by Mrs Robinson. Newton repeated his previous evidence with regard to the alleged conspiracy. The case was adjourned for a week.
