At the inquest on Cleggitt, a 13-year-old son gave evidence that his father had been drinking steadily for three months before the day of the tragedy. When drunk he frequently threatened to kill his wife and children with a gun or axe he carried. When witness came home on the day of th* tragedy his mother said: “The brute (meaning Cleggett) has nearly killed me.” She asked witness to load a gun. The mother walked to within a few yards of his father and said: “Come on now.” The father said: “Let us have it,” and the mother fired. The father ’ walked. away, and the mother asked witness to load the gun again. He did so and then went to the kitchen. He heard a second shot and his father staggered. The mother said: ‘f-I got him that time.” His mother then returned to the house, made the beds and then telephoned the police that she had shot her husband dead.
