Despite the unpleasant weather, the recent meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club was quite a pleasant gathering. Present indications point to Avoia contesting the Marton Cup in Jieu of that of Stratford.
Jt is stated that C'leasanta will not be brought to Stratford. If this is correct the field for the Stratford Cup will he on a par with the Christinas Handicap field. At the time ol writing climatic conditions do not look favourable for the Stratford Racing ' Club’s meeting, which opens to-morrow (Thursday). During the race for' the Auckland Cup the imported horse Royal Divorce strained himself in front, and will need a spell.
Although ho failed to gain anv place money in the Auckland Cup. the-Eg-mont-trained Muraahi ran a capital race, linishing a close fifth. General Pryde will be ridden at the Stratford meeting by L. Manson. This gelding is not showing his best form. Alter a number of disappointments Merry Ann has developed form, and has won three times in succession. She is very well just now. Considering the weakness of the opposition and his easv win on the opening day, Papaponga" paid a false dividend on the second dav of the Taranaki meeting. The imported King the Bell and Steel Bar were backed for a lot of money at the Auckland meeting, but in each instance the opposition was too strong. East year the Auckland-owned horses brought south for the Taranaki holiday meetings performed well, but' so far this season those from the same province are not doing so well. Miss Mickey injured a leg on the opening day of the Taranaki meeting, hence her withdrawal, on the second day. The Emneror, which won over hurdles at tiny AYoodviile meeting, may be a runner for the hurdles on the second day of. the Stratford meeting. Jf started. l ‘Rangi” Thompson will ride him..
Apprentice M. Gray, who steered Aoma to victory at the Taranaki-meet-ing, is a nephew of the crack horseman If. Gray. On his showing at New Plymouth, this lad has qualifications that g<> to make a good rider. On his only appearance at the recent Taranaki meeting, Orchid did not show his customary speed, this, being accounted for by reason of Absurd’s son suffering from an attack of the kid-
neysr If all right, Orchid will be a runner at Stratford to-morrow.
irapuka did not jump out with liis usual smartness on the. second day of the recent Taranaki meeting, and this undoubtedly cost him the race. Irapuka. caught Glencaiin .some little distance from the post, but his early effort told a tale, and he again weakened in the last half chain. . Bonogue recently joined E. Murtagh’s stable. Although an acceptor fo/ the Stratford ’meeting, he is a very improbable starter-, as he has had a bad time with his teeth and other ailments. It is just possible Bcnoghe may be spelled.
