Fifty persons were killed and fifty seriously wounded in an explosion in a compound at the station, while 28u suffered slight injuries. The vessel Otaru, with a cargo of 865 cases of dynamite, was being discharged at the pier-side. One box was dropped and the whole consignment exploded. - The station, with the coal and goods yards,, was set on fire. Several lighters were sunk, and buildings in the neighbourhood were shattered. Further details are not known.

It is understood that secret:, negotiations are. in progress for thej formation of a powerful transport workers’ group similar to the one in Sydney, and there is every likelihood that the move will now we successful-. •If the negotiations are completed they will greatly strengthen the hands of seamen and any dispute between them and the owners may mean the complete paralysis of industry. A: big maritime upheaval early next year now seems inevitable.
