GORGEOUS CEREMONIAL: POPE AND CARDINALS. IN AWE-INSPIRING SCENE. JY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Dec. 29, 11.30 a.m. ROME, Dec. 28. The opening of the Holy Door was a gorgeous ceremonial- Cardinals wore long red silk trains and white fur caps. Oriental patriarchs wore jewelled head dresses. The Pope, covered with a golden mantle, was seated in . a chair, carried by twelve bearers. He ■ ocendecl the throne while the Rontificial March was played. He descended a 'cross in one hand and a lighted caudle in the other, the choir singing the Te Deum. Beside the throne, there vas a gold dish whereon a golden hammer and sponges with holy water with' which to remove bits of masonry from the door.- The Pope struck thrice with the golden hammer and the wall. collapsed, revealing the Jubilee Door.. An immense crowd waited in Steptres Square. The ceremony was hidden iiom them by velvet curtains. ' Then they poured in the newly-opened door, each kissing the. doorposts.
