(From Our Own Correspondent-.) FIRE BOARD.
The, quarterly ‘ meeting:.. of, the Fire Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Thursday afternoon. Those present were: Messrs Thomas (chairman), C. W. Allen.; 1.. J. Bridger, F. Honan, T. King, T„. C. Stanners, D O. Jones, and the secretary (Mr. W. .Waters)/ / ’ Air/;. D. Clements,; recently appointed. borough solicitor, wrote accepting the position.- ■. . -.
The secretary of the Fire Brigade (Air, C. Le beau)...wrote .stating that tlie Brigade \yere well satisfied with tlie. general treatment received from :the board with regard to the -Government allowance.-—The- letter was received. ...; The town clerk wrote stating, that the fire plug -Hear the Box Factory, concerning which a complaint had been made, had received attention. The matter of clearly marking the fire plugs in the main street was also receiving attention...
-.Referring to .the. boards application for a night street light service in front of the Eire Brigade Station the. Taranaki , Electric Power Board agreed, to the erection, of the same at the annual cost of £3 15s. The secretary, of the United Fire Brigades’ Insurance Society wrote explaining that the society, had. heed formed as an auxiliary to the ordinary Workers’ Compensation. Fund, and was not sufficient to protect the hoard. He advised that a policy covering brigade members be taken out with the assurance companies. The ■ secretary stated that the. board were covered up to the end of the term, and the matter could be revived in May next., . • Inspector ..Hugo (Dominion Fire Brigade Inspector), reported that the brigade was composed of active and keen men who were drilled to some degree- of efficiency. . The. water service was sufficient for the .requirements of the borough. He made some recommendations concerning the indication, of fire plugs in the streets, the condition of the water, main intake, and the need for better lighting and accommodation, of the fire station.. It was decided to,draw the council’s attention to.the report, concerning the water intake and to install the electric light at the station.
Ihe hoard then went into committee to consider .tenders for alteration and addition to the station, and on resuming reported' that no tender was accepted, and that the matter of providing suitable accommodation was left with the finance-committee; - '
