MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) V ALEIDIOI ORY. A very pleasant function took place at the Manaia Bowling Club on Friday alternon, when tne members ol the Manaia Club assembled to hid fareweiied aud make a presentation to Mr. 4- Belliman, who is leaving Manaia to take up a position in Wellington. Before proceeding with the .presentation, a game of ten heads was played, in which Mr. Belliman skipped No. 1 and Mr. T'oroa Ngatau No. 2. The-game resulted in No. 1 winning by points to 1. The players were: No. I—Poynter, Smith, Andrews, Belliman (skip), 11. No. 2—Franklin, Badley, R. Putt, Toroa

At the conclusion the . 7>resident of the club, in making a presentation of a case of Loewe pipes and wallet, referred to the great loss the club would sustain in losing Mr. Belliman ; also as a citizen. The guest was held in the highest esteem, and during his residence in .Manaia, which was over a. period of five years, he had always taken a keen interest in bowling and in every kind of sport. He was a real good sport on the green and always played the game. In voicing the sentiments of all the members of the Manaia Bowling Club, as well as The citizens, they wlere indeed very sorry at the guest’s departure, and wished him every .success and good hick in his new position.

Mr. A . G. Bennett, in speaking of Mr. . Belliman, who was an employee of his for five years, spoke in glowing terms of him as a straight, .good, conscientious man in all his dealings and work. He was indeed very "sorry when the guest had relinquished from his services. He hoped that he would have every success in his new position, and regretted his departure from Manaia.

Oither speakers who ' also endorsed what the previous speakers had uttered were Messrs. W. Badley A. Andrews, F. Poynter, A. Franklin and Toroa.

Mr. Bel liman, who was completelytaken by surprise, heartily thanked the president and members of the club; also the speakers for their kind utterances and nice presentation te him. CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES. Gieat preparations are in progress tor the Christmas festivities to be held in Manaia on Christmas Eve. The various committees have everything ready, and a splendid afternoon's and evening’s programme has been arranged. A fide open-air concert will be put 011 in the band rotunda, and the best vocal and instrumental talent will take part. The Manaia Municipal Brass Band will render a select programme suitable for the festive season, tor the afternoon a special free programme has been arranged for the children from all parts of the district, and all children will receive free toys, lollies and soft drinks. Father Christmas will arrive about 2 p.rn. Motor buses are going out to alfparts of the district to bring in the people both afternoon and night. The town will be brilliantly lighted, and all shops and business people of Manaia are out co cater well for all, and they are not sparing any expense to make this omistrnas a record one for Manaia. T ,. proficiency passes. Eight pupils were presented bv the Manaia Convent for the proficiency examination. Seven secured proficiency and one competency. Five of the proficiency pupils Mere exempted.
