FIRE FIGHTING.
THE AVAILABLE WATER SUPPLY. AT NEW HOSPITAL. An application for permission to lay a 4-in. water pipe to the new hospital site, the connection to be used only for fire fighting purposes, was granted by the Hawera Borough Council last night. i Cr. Osborne said that the Fire Brigade superintendent'(Mr Morrison) had noticed in the newspaper report of the last Borough Council meeting that the Council had been granted permission to lay a 3-in.' pipe. The superintendent considered a 3in. pipe to be absolutely useless for fire fighting purposes,' and as in such case it was bis duty to object, he bad straightway communicated with the chairman of'. the Hospital Board (Mr F. W. Gillanders). A . letter was . read fiom the Borough Engineer stating that be could see no objection to the application. Cr. Morrissey then 'moved that the application b.& granted. Or. Champion, in seconidng, pointed out that in the case of a recent Auckland fire a 4in, main with a 220 lbs pressure had been found inadequate. Cr. Brunette: Is a 4-in, pipe big enough then ? The -Mayor: It is all we can give them. The pipe will have to come off a. 4in. mail). Cr. Osborne said that 4in. main on a ‘‘dead end” was a very bad feature from a fire fighting point of view. The motion was then put and carried. It was also resolved to N dra\v the Hospital Board’s attention to the fact that there was no fire plug oppositethe Old Men’s Home. The meeting then adjourned.
