SWIMMING.
PROPOSED VISIT OF WORLD’S CHAMPION DIVER.. At the last general meeting of the executive committee of the Taranaki Swimming - Centre, those present included Mr. W. A. Spragg (Hawera). SWIMMING AT SCHOOLS.
In their annual report the Wanganui Centre made 'appreciative reference to the unselfish manner in which the school- teachers had sacrificed their spare time to teaching the children to swim. The details for the Taranaki Centre ■schools are as follow:—Stratford, 4 merit, 30 proficiency, 38 learners, 72 total, compared with 77 last year. Eltham, 1-0, 11, 20, 41, against none. Opunake, 5,6, 24, 35, against 16. Patea District High School, —, 6, 16, 22, against none. Oeo, —, 1 ? 6,7, against none. VISIT OF CHAMPION DIVER,
That an invitation be extended to 11. Eve, of Australia, was approved by the various centres, and tne association wrote stating that Eve would arrive in Auckland about the second week in January. In the event of Mr. Eve touring New Zealand, it was decided to negotiate for two appearances in Taranaki, one at New Plymouth and one at liawexa.
•Mr. W. A. Spragg, of Hawera, who intends going to Christchurch, will represent the centre at the championships. The association further stated that lor the next New Zealand championships, the following compulsory dives had been fixed: —Men, low board, Nos. 9 and 15; high board, Nos. 8 and 20; ladies, low board. Nos. fi and 8. high hoard, Nos. 5 and 10; intermediate, low board, Nos. 6 and 19, high board, Nos. 11 and 15.
The secretary of the EStham Swimming Club wrote informing the centre that their season opened on December 4 and asked that they be allowed to affiliate with the centre. —This was granted. The chairman remarked that he _ was pleased that Eltham were again beginning to display an interest in swimming.
The Opimake and Inglewood Clubs were also granted affiliation. CLAMNGBOLD’S- CASE..
The matter of Mr. W. J. Claringbold’s /status came before the Taranaki Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association at its meeting, and the Herald reports: With further reference to the matter of Clavingbold, of • Hawera, who through his professional status a« a inn tor-cyclist had been unable to participate in amateur swimming events, the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association stated that they had received -a reply’ from the International Federation to their question whether motor-cyclists who raced for miniey could swim as amateurs. The reply read: “No rule. Personal opinion amateur.’’ Therefore it was felt unnecessary for Ohiringhold to proceed with his application for reinstatement. Notice of motion would be given to rescind the matter at the next meeting, and so automatically wipe out the whole tiling. Claringhold would thereupon he free to join the Hawera Club and swim as an amateur.
The secretary of the Hawera Club received this morning a. telegram from the New Zealand Council stating that formal action had been taken to 'recognise Mr. Claringhold’s status as an amateur.
