A CRISIS

IN FRENCH POLITICS. PREMIERI’S 1 ’S ILLNESS. FAR-REACHING EFFECTS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Dec. 16, 10.50 a.m. LOjN DON, Dec. 15. The Times Pans correspondent, discussing the possibility of a French Ministerial crisis as a result of M. Herriotfs illness, points out that, in the course of the next few weeks many international questions of the highest importance will claim the attention of the French Government. The correspondent says there is no doubt that when ;vl. Herriot is sufficiently recovered lie will be ordered to take a long rest. He is said to be progressing satisfactorily, but the indications are that it yill be at least a fortnight before he will be able to get up. Meanwhile the prospects of his prolonged absence are causing considerable anxiety, to his political friends, -who arev much perturbed in regard to the situation which would arise if he • were to resign. They realise that it is only M. Herriot’s personal influence that, so far, has induced the Socialists to support a purely radical Government. If his influence is withdrawn their adhesion might no longer be possible. Received Dec. 16, 11.30 a.m. LONDON. Dec. 15.

Tho Daily Express understands that Mr Chamberlain and M. Herriot discussed the- siutation in Paris, and a provisional, agreement was reached regarding the immediate future.
