BIG FIRES IN SYDNEY.

HEAVY DAMAGE SUSTAINED. BY C ABLE—PRE°3 ASSOCIATION—COPY BIGHT SYDNEY, Dec. 14. A fire at Mort’s dock engineering works destroyed several buildings, covering two acres and occupied by a pattern store and pattern shop. After a hard fight by brigades and floats the outbreak was confined to this area. Several houses in the vicinity caughtfire, but were quickly extinguished. The damage is estimated at £60,000. It is believed the outbreak was caused by a. piece of broken glass in the dried grass round the buildings receiving the sun’s rays.

Another large outbreak is raging in John Dewar’s whisky warehouse in the city. The firemen are experiencing great difficulty in coping with the flames, which are being fanned by a strong southerly gale.
