WAR DEBTS.
ATTITUDE OF UNITED STATES, BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, Dec. 12. Commenting on the utterance made by the Chancellor of the British Exchequer (Mr ; Winston Churchill) with reference to the settlement of war debts, The World says: “Tsus attitude is fair to the United States, and it is not by a single inch more than fair to Britain. As a great trading and investing nation, the United States cannot, -in the long run, offend or imperil world trade relations • by insistence upon treatment as a preferred creditor.”
The Herald-Tribune says: “Britain has funded war borrowings from the United States on terms which she considers fair and reasonable. Britain is not in a position to remonstrate with the United States about the terms of its other war settlements. If France and the United States can agree on a reasonable refunding plan, that is a matter between the French Government and ourselves.” 1
