SCHOOL FARM INSTRUCTION.

OALF-R,EARING COMPETITINS. FINE QUALITY. ' In-addition to the valuable work of root-growing fostered in the primary schools by the Farmers’ Union and the Education Board through their capable .and enthusiastic instructors, another excellent competition was added a couple of years ago. when trials in calf-rearing were instituted for the pupils. This has meant a good deal of preliminary work for the instructors, aided ,by the Agricultural Department officials, arid much organisational effort by them and detail workby the judges, who have- readily lent assistance. This year Messrs. McL’Dowie, .Barraclough, F. Hoskin and Wren have so far filled the judging positions, arid their work has been, highly appreciated. The judging commenced "this week and is being continued daily. The organisers and judges are having an extremely strenuous time. ” ' ■ They were at the five small country schoqls round Hawera. on Monday and at Okaiawa, . Matapu and Manaia on Tuesday. Yesterday’s . work was at Rawhiti roa, . aml there- the school teachers, Mrs.- McNeil and Miss Kelly, and the school committee and parents made a. special feature of the clay’s work." There was quite a large’ gathering, aiid’this included Sir Walter Oarncross' a n.d Mr. Peebles, of Elthaui. After , the judging concluded . Sir Walter made a short speed) stressing the value of the competitions from every point of view. He said also- that if only the children were taught a love of animals and developed an interest in the work of the farm, then the competitions fulfilled a very useful function. Mr. Peebles then 11 presented the gold medal donated by him for the best dairy type calf, and it fell to Phyllis Woo'd, ■ whose success was heartily'applauded.
