TEN MONTHS’ IMPORTS.
SUBSTANTIAL ADVANCE. The imports of merchandise into New Zealand for the ten mouths ended October 3l show a substantial advance over tlie figures for the corresponding ten of last year, taking the merchandise in their several groups, the position is as under:
'There is am increase of £4,151.3-15, equal to abput -I.IJ per cent. Motor vehicles - and petrol accoun t for £l,480,001) of the increase, and grain, mostly wheat, for £1.142,000, electrical machinery for £613,000, sugar for £257,000, coal for £280,000, and timbers for £392,000. During the ten months there were - 15,283 1 motor vehicles imported into 4 the country, and the value was set down at £4 - 898,228. For the corresponding ten months of last year 11,336 ; motor vehicles were imported, and for the corresponding term of 1922 the number was 292/. S.o.ft goods exhibit a decrease of £953.000. hardware and metals - , on the other hand, increased by about £944,000, foodstuffs show an increase of £1.382,900. due, as already stated, to the heavy imports of wheat. Beverages show a slight contraction. Ihe value of the whisky imported was £501,459. against £610,36-3: other spirits .£106.074, against £95,042; i wines £104,550, against £93.888: amc! tea _accounted for £787.609,- against £715 866.
