PRISONER ESCAPES.

INCIDENT ON MAIN TRUNK

(by telegraph—PßVsa association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 6. A prisoner named Lander, when proceeding under escort on the Main Trunk to Mount Eden Gaol, early this morning made a sensational escape. When the train was near Tekauwliata he dashed from the carriage and jumped from the platform while the train was going at 40 miles an hour. At Tekauwliata the train was stopped and one of the warders organised a search party, which returned to the scene of the escape, but has not yet reported whether any signs of the man have been found. RECAPTURED! SHORT-LIVED LIBERTY. Later. Lander was recaptured at 1.30 p.m., and is being brought to Auckland. No details are available.
