REV. GRANT COWEN.
RECOGNITION OF SERVICES. APPOINTED CANON. As a recognition of the excellent work performed by the vicar of St. Matthew’s Church (the Rev. C. H Grant Cowen), the Standing Committee of the Auckland diocese decided on Tuesday that he should be appointed a canon of St. Mary’s Cathedral, in place of Canon P. T. Williams, who has resigned. Reference to the valuable organising work carried out by Mr. Cowen was made by the Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Averill). Mr. Cowen has been active m the..interests: of the Central Fund, of which he is chairman, and by dint ?[ his efforts this, the fighting fund of the diocese, has been considerably swelled. His work in connection with . ® _Hmkson spiritual healing iriission in 1923 is well remembered. • Mr. Cowen has been an indefatigable worker m assisting the Community of the Good Shepherd to raise money for the proposed new mission house in Grey Street, from which centre a work of compassion among the poor and needy will be carried on. In his new office La non Owen will undertake special organising v’ork for the diocese. Canon Cowen is a native of England, and studied at the London College of Divinity and at Christ’s College, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1905, and came to New Zealand in 1912 as vicar of Hnnterville. Later he became vicar of Hawera. For the past five y ais Canon Cowen has been parish priest of St. Matthew’s, and has endeared himself to all.—Auckland Star.
