TRADES UNIONS' PROTEST. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Dec. 1. The secretaries of tlie various tradesunions are lodging objections in the' Arbitration Court to the agreement between Armstrong, Whitworth and Co. and the New Zealand Workers’ Union in respect to plumbers, engineers, carpenters, blacksmiths and boiler-makers at the work in connection with the Arapuni dam and a section of the East Coast railway, under which the overtime rate shall be paid only when the number of hours in each week exceeds 47. Under existing awards a week’s work is defined at 44 hours, and time over must be paid at overtime rates. It is objected that the old terms made with Armstrong, Whit-, .worth Company are more favourable than to other employers. It is understood other employees will also offer strong objection.
