CELESTRIAL PHENOMENON.
OBSERVATIONS AT WANGANUI. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, Nov. 30. Extraordinary and unique activity on the sun’s surface was recorded this morning by the well-known astronomer jVIi J. I\ Ward, at the Wanganui observatory. He, states that an enormous sunspot passing a limb of the sun gave rise to colossal prominences, and seen through the spectroscope at the observatory presented a wonderful sight. The prominences were estimated at 150,000 to 250,000 miles in height. They are of the kind and form known as metallic and quiescent, and are of great variety. Mr Ward states that the spectacle is unique in astronomical research in the Dominion, although a similar celestial phenomenon on a smaller scale was observed here ten years ago.
