LIFE SENTENCE PRISONER.
DIES AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Serving a life sentence for offences of a sexual nature, a, prisoner named John Leslie Lander, age 34, died suddenly at the New Plymouth prison on Saturday afternoon. Lander was subject to epileptic fits, and was known to have had eight to ten in one 'day while in the prison. He became ill at noon on Saturday, and was taken to his cell, where he was made comfortable and attended to by the warders, who visited him m frequent intervals. Lander appeared to be improving shortly after lunch, and told a warder that he was “all right.” He then seemed to. go to sleep. The visits were maintained, but at about ten minutes to four, it was noticed that his face showed a bluish tint. The medical, officer (Dr. It. Brewster) was summoned, but life was then extinct. In recording a verdict that death was due to heart failure following a fit, the coroner (Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M.) said at the inquest yesterday morning that he was satisfied that everything that was possible had bene done for the deceased, riven if the, doctor had been with him during the whole time, he could not have done anything more.—News.
