NOLANTOWN MERGER
COMMISSION CONTINUES. The commission on sfche question of the Nolantown merger continued its sittings at the Magistrate’s Court today. J. W. Harding, county clerk, said that the annual amounts expended in the Nolantown area were about £403 up to March of 1921, £314 up to March of 1922, £224 to March of 1923, £362 up to March of 1924, and £333 for the seven months of the present year, an average of £3lB per annum. • 11. B. Burdekin, chairman of the Greater Hawera Committee of the Borough Council, said he was personally in favour of the merger for the reasons of sanitation and the consolidation of the area before undertaking the water main duplication. Duplication must soon he carried out. as the shortage of the borough supply in the summer often did not allow of upstairs conveniences being used, owing to the absence of pressure. In reply to Mr. O’Dea witness said that, from the point of view of the water supply, it was just as necessary that Ramanui and Turitown. should come into the borough as it was that Nolantown should. John Murtagh, the owner of over five acres in Nolantown, said his rates came to £6 19s lid. "Water wobld only cost Nolantown ratepayers an average of £1 per head. At oile of the meetings where the matter of merging had been discussed* the chairman of the county had stated, that if the residents of Nolantown wanted water and drainage they would lifive to merge in the borough.
