EIGHTY YEARS’ PROGRESS.
COMPLIMENTS TO NEW ZEALAND
“I am surprised at what I have seen in New Zealand; it seems all so familiar, except that I am more and more impressed by the achievements of 80 years,” said the Rev. T. W. Armour shortly after his arrival in Christchurch. Mr Armour has accepted a call to Knox Church, and arrived in New Zealand a few weeks ago from Inverness,, Scotland: After spending a few days in Auckland he went to Dunedin, where he has been staying with some of his relatives. In stating his impressions' of the Dominion Mr Armour said that lie had seen Auckland, a portion of Wellington, and a great deal of Dunedin and the surrounding country (reports the Lyttelton Times). He has been amazed at the progress of the past 80 years. “I don’t know what the globe-trotters that you may get here say about you being behind the times, but if they do make-refer-ence to it,” he added, “all I can say is that they are lacking in historical imagination. I have a great respect for the pioneers, and I cannot but feel that I have entered into a great heritage. I am greatly impressed with the type of people here. It is pleasing to find a white population, in contrast to South Africa, for instance, and Australia, where one finds a lot of coloured folk. I am greatly impressed with the stalwart type of the folk in New Zealand, and I have not seen any physical deformities in the people of your cities. That would not be true of the Home cities. The people here suggest to me a hard-working lot of folk who are making good.”
