THE MATCH OF THE TOUR
The defeat of the All Blacks, nearly two decades ago, the only check in a victorious tour, has probably been the cause cf more discussion amongst enthusiasts in Rugby circles than any other incident or event in the history of New Zealand’s national game. The story of the disputed try has been told and retold, and, as a fact, many competent critics in the Old Country -who saw the game have agreed in stating that a draw would have been much the fairest result. Be that as it may, the
decision went against our team and was accepted in the way that has been taught Englishmen the world over by all the traditions of good sportsmanship. Naturally defeat at any time is not welcomed, especially when a referee’s decision is open to question, but New Zealanders accepted the official ruling in the famous game with Wales in a proper sporting spirit. When the present team went Home, probably the whole Rugby world of New Zealand felt that the match which above all others they would like the team to win would be the match against Wales. Reports from Home show that Wales is united in one great resolve to win to-day’s match, if it is humanly possible. The Rugby honour of both countries is in the keeping of the two teams, and, of one «thing we may be quite sure, it will be a veritable battle of the strong men. While we, in common with the countless thousands who are keenly interested in Rugby, sincerely hope our boys will win, we also hope that the match will be played in the sporting spirit so closely associated with English sport, and, should Wales prove victorious, New Zealanders will be ready to .i°in in congratulations to a better team. But, as they themselves realise, they will have to be a pretty good team to win from our chosen men.
