The Hawera Star.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1924. HAWERA MUNICIPAL BAND.

Delivered every evening by 3 o’clock m Hawera Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltbam : Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opunake, Otakelio, Manutahi, AHod, Hurley ville, Patea, \ Waverley, Mokoia, Whakamara, Ohangai, Meremere, Fraser Road, and Araraia.

We are very pleased indeed to leara of the success which is being met with by those who are working to establish the Hawera Municipal Band upon a strong footing. The bandsmen axe working enthusiastically, and there is apparent among the men, the committee, and the townspeople, the ispint of co-operation needed for success. excellent response has l been made to the appeal for funds, and it is expected that when the canvass has been completed the committee will have a substantial sum available to assist the band. As readers know, we are keenly interested in the various musical societies in the town and district, and we hope that the splendid work which was recorded in yesterday’s issue will be followed up by citizens and that the band will receive- strong support, not only now, but consistently in the years to come. Many of the best composers hare written music for bands and there will bo ample scope for the new band and its conductor to provide very interesting programmes. Band music is very popular and, with their beautiful King Edward Park and a \yell-trained band to provide well-chosen programmes, the people may look forward to many a. happy hour in the open air. The success of the band’s playing will depend to- a large extent upon careful practice by each member. The- bandmaster v ill leave no doubt a.s to the results that he desires to obtain, but it will remain for each bandsman to practise diligently until he has secured the mastery of every bar in his part. As every player of a musical instrument knows, or should know, the only way to attain the mastery of one’s instrument is by consistent, diligent practice. There is no royal road, and herein lies much of the charm of music—one must practise regularly and carefully if one is to gain the control needed to unfold its great and limitless beauties. Hawera bandsmen no doubt realise the importance of careful individual and collective practice and, with a bandmaster of wide experience to guide them, and keen that the performances should reach a high standard, they will, we are sure, pay careful attention to his instructions and do, their best to carry them out. We wish the hand every success and look forward to its appearances in public.
