WOMEN ATHLETES.
MEDICAL OPINION. At the annual meeting of the N.Z.A.A.A. on Monday, a letter was received from the British Medical Association (New Zealand branch) in reply to a request for an authoritative opinion from the association on the subject of women competing in athletic events. The reply stated that “while favouring all reasonable athletic exercises for women the committee was of opinion that competition by ihem in track events is harmful.” When the question of adding ladies’ events to the championship programme was raised, delegates stated that rhe report wais insufficient, and they desired to know what events were harmful, and those that were not. Other delegates supported the addition, on the ground that events could be on the programme if there were a demand from the centres.
It was finally decided to refer the matter to the centres for Gieir views, in view of the British Medical Association’s opinion. They are also to he asked whether the points in ladies’ events should count tor the championship shield.
