WANGANUI WOOL SALES.
N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY. At the first wool sale of the season on Monday a catalogue of 10,400 bales was submitted by nine brokers,* our proportion being 1948 bales. The . bidding was keen from the outset, and the prices • recorded must be highly gratifying to. wool .owners. They were tne highest ever received by farmers in the Wanganui district. The bidding was well, spread, Bradford and Continental buyers being particularly keen. The few lines suitable for the American demand were strongly competed for, but there is not . a great quantity of such, wools grown in this territory. Tke Wanganui sale furnished the first real idea of the prices that were offering for top-mak-ers and spinners’ wools, as the balk of the offerings at the' previous sales of the season were super wools aud in unusually good condition, whereas the Wanganui catalogue was a good fair average of what the district produces. As to whether these extraordinary prices, will hold is a question it is impossible to answer at the moment. The test will come when the big offerings are submitted at the next sale on January 9. The clip this season is generally well grown, but owing to the continuous wet weather some of the wools were rather ‘‘thin,” resulting in a. poor average weight per fleece. .Our catalogue was very strongly competed for by all sections of the trade. Wool classed by the company sold particularly well, and ample evidence was forthcoming of th© value to the farmer of proper classing. Wools binned by the company realised excellent prices, as high as 28d per lb being paid for one line.
