CORRESPONDENCE.
AN APPEAL. XMAS CHEER FOR SOLDIER PATIENTS. (To the Editor). Sir, —-May I make an appeal through your paper ? Anzac and Armistice days have been set aside “Lest we forget.” Oil these days our thoughts go out to thousands who listened when Britain cried “Oh, come my sons iirom the ends of the earth, help the little grey mother who bore you.” Thanks to these sons the seas are cleared for shipping and the wardogs are kennelled; but, alas, the marks of their teeth remain. It had been hoped that these years of peace would, in a measure, havei effected a cure fojr many of the war troubles. Unfortunately/ this is not. so, and each year there are a few more patients in the mental hospitals. This should give;us cause to ponder. On Tuesday, December 2, my committee are having in Manaia a street collection and a stall for the sale of produce, flowers, cakes, etc., for the purpose of sending Xmas cheeir to the soldier tients in the Hawera Public Hospital and the Porirua Mental Hospital. By many people it may be said tha.t the Government should provide everything for these patients. Correct; but it is the little personal touch that counts, so much at Xmas time, and we have the assurance of the medical superintendent that the patients are able to enjoy the result pf our efforts. We appeal to every person in the Waim ate West County (and we have never appealed in vain) to give more than a passing thought to the sons of Britain who are deemed to. spend the remainder of perhaps long lives living through the he'll they endured from 1914 to 1918. The world seems “still in the melting pot,” and times are hard with many calls upon the purse; but this cause must appeal to everyone, and I am confident that just as these sons answered “the call” so will you all help to cheetr the sick by giving liberally to the collectors in the street and sending to the stall large donations of produce, cakes, sweets, etc. —I am, etc., C. MITCHELL, Chairwoman Waimate Plains Ladies’ Patriotic Committee.
