“MISTER A.”
FURTHER QUESTIONS. A KNIGHT’S EVIDENCE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Nov. 26, .235 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 25. In the bank case (referred to on page 5) Sir Havelock Charles, giving evidence, said the identity of'“Mister A” was revealed .to him for the purpose of the case. He had been for some years in the State where “Mister A” lived, and he was well acquainted with the religious practices and customs of the country. Witness then answered m writing a question on paper handed to him by counsel. The Judge explained to the jifry that the questions related; to written questibns put. to Mrs Robinson in crossexamination.
Sir John Simon contended that the money was. taken from “Mister A” by the most terrible of all menaces. He pointed out that under the Larceny Act a person demanding money bv menaces was guilty of felony" and punishment by penal servitude not exceeding five years. ■ Dr. Mary Schaflieb gave evidence that she practised for many years iii “Mister A’s” country and attended native, ladies. She was shown the questions and answers by Sir Havelock Charles. Witness agreed with both. Sir John Simon referred to the preposterous sum paid by “Mister A?’ Mr Justice Dai-ling remarked that he Understood “Mister A” was advised by his solicitor.
, Sir John Simon replied that A” .never saw his solicitor.
Mr Justice Darling said he did not know how he got that impression. It astounded him that any solicitor, unless accustomed to deal" with this kind of case, would have allowed “Mister A” to part more than £50,000.
