' MORE LIBERAL ALLOWANCES. FOR CONVEYANCE OF CHILDREN. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Nov._ 26. A conference between the officials' of the Education Department and chairmen, secretaries, and architects of Education .Boards, was opened in Wellington this, lhoriiing, Mr. Caughley (Director of Education) presiding in the absence outlie Minister. The Director referred to . the benefit that had resulted from the conference held last year, and expressed the hope that further, good would result from the present proceedings. No doubt more would be done this year to reduce the size oi classes. He hoped that soon there would be no class of more than sixty pupils. The number of pupil teachers was being so rapidly reduced that soon there would be none left, but under the proposed amended regulations he hoped the position would be changed. Further proceedings are being conducted in committee. The conference discussed the basis of representation oil education boards, and it was. decided to ask the Government to bring in legislation providing for a more even distribution of representation. General approval was expressed of the principle of the consolidation of small schools. It was suggested that more liberal allowance should be made for conveying children to school. It was further decided to urge the Government to provide allowances in cases where children ride on horse-hack. The school architects are deliberating separately.
