THE DAYS OF SEVERUS.
RELICS FROM AFRICAN PALACE. Excavations at Leptis Magna, the ancient imperial city of Tripoli, Africa, have brought to light two wonderfully beautiful statues which are sure to prove oi high artistic and historic interest. They arc a Venus and acithara player. It was while removing the millen-nium-old layers of sand from two marble columns, 40in in diameter, that the diggers found the statues buried deep. As they lay near the ancient baths, it is evident that they formed part of the coil-lection placed by Septimius Severus, the famous Roman Eimperor. who vainly built a wall to keep the Bents from coming to England.
Another discovery is tlie fourfold facade of the Imperial Palace. There is also a collection of war memorial trophies with marble effigies of member© of the Imperial family.
